Landlords appreciate highly-maintained homes attract new tenants

Landlords and homeowners are appreciating the benefits that ensuring that their properties are well maintained can bring.

That is the view of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), which has suggested that keeping homes in good condition can add value.

In turn, this can help to attract new tenants and keep existing renters on friendly terms, boosting the likelihood of them extending their stays.

Andrew Leech, director of the NHIC, noted that bathrooms and kitchens are among the most popular areas of houses for people to reinvest in.

He said: "People these days are appreciating the fact that they need to keep their homes more highly-maintained than they have done in the past, so they are taking the responsibility into their own hands.

"To save money on costs, they are doing a lot more of the work themselves rather than seek professional trade advice and this is a good trend and a good initiative to follow."

The NHIC has advised homeowners to bring in professionals for electrical and gas work, for health and safety reasons.
