Regional rental prices rise

Rent prices in several regions of the UK are on the rise, according to new statistics from Gumtree.com.

The website has indicated that landlords in cities such as Birmingham, Leeds, Oxford and Glasgow have all seen average rents increase.

However, the likes of Leicester, Bournemouth and Bristol have all recorded declining rent values in the latest Gumtree.com Rental Price Index.

Phil Spencer, the TV property expert, noted that breaking down figures regionally paints a more accurate picture of the current state of the housing market.

He said: "Regardless of whether you're trying to buy, sell, rent or let – 2009 has been full of uncertainty in the housing market.

"As the sales market recovers, more people will look to sell and this will increase supply in key regions and even out the volatility of the rental market."
