Owning a property an 'unrealistic expectation' for many young adults

Being a homeowner for increasing numbers of younger people has become an unrealistic expectation.

This is according to Steven Hilton, spokesperson for the National Landlords Association, who was responding to new research revealing that the average age of those renting accommodation has risen.

"People don't necessarily want to commit to the long-term investment of home ownership," he said.

"Rental accommodation, when it is at its best, is providing flexibility for those people who choose that path."

Mr Hilton went on to say that the availability of affordable finance is also preventing people from buying property, but that lifestyle changes are an important factor.

A poll by Spareroom.co.uk found that the average age of a tenant now stands at 28, which is a rise from 2006's figure of 25.

It was also revealed that lodger numbers are at an all-time high, with numbers increasing by 67 per cent in the last 12 months alone.
