Landlords who operate properties in areas at risk of flooding could benefit from new protective measures announced by the government yesterday (November 19th).Communities are set to be "better protected" under the new plans published in the Flood and Water Management Bill by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The bill takes into account a series of recommendations from Sir Michael Pitt's review of the floods seen during the summer of 2007.Under the regulations, local authorities will be given more powers to manage local flood risks and the Environment Agency will oversee flooding and coastal erosion at a national level. The government is now providing more funding into flood defence than ever before.Sustainable drainage systems are set to feature in all new building developments where possible to help protect against surface water flooding. The bill will also prioritise inspections and maintenance in a bid to improve the safety of communities living close to reservoirs.Environment secretary Hilary Benn said: "Sir Michael Pitt's report recommended important changes - the Flood and Water Management Bill will implement the most important of these to provide better management of flood risk, clarify responsibilities, protect water supplies, and safeguard community groups from unaffordable rises in water bills."Get a landlords building insurance quote today from Simple Landlords Insurance.
