Boiler Scrappage Scheme 'should be extended'

The government's Boiler Scrappage Scheme should be extended to include boilers other than those that are G-rated.

This is the view of the eco homes and sustainable residential development website whatgreenhome.com, which said to meet the demand for the scheme, the government should open the offer up to households which operate boilers from all ratings.

Currently, households with G-rated boilers can redeem a £400 voucher from the government, which can be used against the cost of a new heating system

The initiative has been introduced in a bid to reduce carbon emissions from the UK's households.

Recently-published government figures have revealed that nearly 50 per cent of the available vouchers have been "snapped up".

However, Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said the scheme is currently only available to 125,000 of the UK's 26 million households.

"Why isn't the government rolling this out to include boilers that aren't just G-rated?" he asked.

"If they were to include boilers from B, C, D, E, and F then you would cover a lot more – obviously it would cost a lot more, but you would be seriously saving a lot of CO2 then."
