Savings will depend on existing efficiency, expert claims

The benefits of taking up the offer of a government loan for energy-saving home improvements could be negligible, it has been claimed.

Consumer advice service Confused.com said the benefits from the scheme will depend on how energy-efficient a person's house already is.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at the website, said: "The amount of money you'll save is directly attributable to the cost of installing the energy saving measure and the amount of wasted energy you can reduce.

"Therefore, each measure should be assessed on a case by case basis with priority being given to the least efficient homes or those that waste the most."

The comment follows the launch of the government's new strategy, which outlined a plan to increase the sustainability of British homes.

Under the proposals, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband plans to fund the implementation of energy-efficient systems with subsidies from fuel bill payments.
