Insurers pay out during big freeze

Insurance companies have paid out large amounts to customers as a result of the severe weather conditions over the past few months.

Recently-published figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) have revealed that insurance firms paid out £650 million during what was the coldest UK winter for 30 years.

More than £250 million of this was for claims for property damage, according to the ABI.

The figures could encourage residential landlords to look for a cheap buy-to-let property insurance quote to ensure they are getting a good deal.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Insurers will always respond quickly to the large number of claims that often result from bad weather.

"From dealing with snow damaged roofs and burst pipes, to repairing or replacing vehicles damaged by treacherous driving conditions, insurers helped their customers get through the snow and the freezing temperatures."
