NLA welcomes discussion of London rents

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has responded positively to the discussion of the private rented sector among the candidates for the London mayoral election.

Chief executive of the organisation Richard Lambert noted the city-wide non-profit lettings agency proposed by Labour member Ken Livingstone - which may affect those seeking building contents insurance for landlords - is comparable to the Held2Let scheme in Harrow, which the NLA supports.

It would make it easier for housing benefits claimants, some of which have difficulty finding accommodation, to gain access to private housing, he added.

Furthermore, the candidate's calls for greater levels of affordability in dwellings in the city - such as those outlined in Mr Livingstone's London Living Rent campaign - may need to have a greater consideration of the costs of life in the capital, the NLA declared.

"Rising rents in the private sector do not automatically mean bigger profits," it argued, stating in many cases they reflect the expenses involved in providing a person with a residence.
