Home insurance customers urged to shop around

Home insurance customers are being urged to shop around in order to get a better deal.

Price comparison service moneysupermarket.com has claimed that "loyalty doesn't pay" when it comes to home insurance products.

According to the firm, customers could be wasting as much as £131 per year by automatically renewing their policies.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com said: "By not shopping around for home insurance Brits are effectively watching their hard earned cash go down the drain.

"While home contents insurance is not a legal requirement, I would urge every household to have combined buildings and contents insurance in place."

The comments could encourage homeowners and landlords to seek cheap specialist cover such as that offered by Simple Landlords Insurance.

Ms Owens urged homeowners to take out policies to ensure they are covered for a range of issues including subsidence, burst pipes and boiler breakdown.

The expert said that whilst contents insurance is not a legal requirement, by not taking out cover homeowners could face bills of thousands of pounds as the result of damage or burglaries.
