Letting agent launches petition calling for fee ban U-turn
Thursday 18 January 2018
An Essex lettings agent has set up an online petition calling for a reversal of the government’s proposal to ban fees levied on tenants.
Rob Farrelly, of Friend & Farrelly Property Services in Loughton, says his online petition is the only place that agents can go to seek a U-turn.
Last week, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said that the ban would not be implemented before Spring 2019.
He said: "Firstly, something must be done to help tenants with some agents charging ludicrous fees to tenants!
"I would propose a fee cap. Agents can't charge any higher than a set agreed price. It is vital to sustain affordability for all tenants, landlords and agents."
Mr Farrelly opened the letting agents eight years ago, and says "it is all I have done and know."
"We pride ourselves on offering fair fees to tenants and landlords," he said.
"Tenant fees are a must to survive as a business, we will have to pass on our lost fees to landlords, speaking to our landlords they plan to raise their rents to cover their fees immediately.
"This action makes no sense at all, we can keep everyone happy, set a reasonable cap so tenants, agents and landlords can continue to survive comfortably.
“My plea is for to others to sign this petition but equally as important, I ask people to ‘share, share, share’. Facebook, Linkedin and email are great platforms for this.
"If you work in a company with multiple offices, please forward to everyone. There is only one way to have our voices heard… We need to make some noise."
To date it has around 8,300 signatures and needs 10,000 to trigger a response from the government, and 100,000 signatures for a debate on the subject in parliament to take place.
